So I know pop music is largely full of crap, Katy Perry has clueless homophobic lyrics & transphobic tweets, and Lady Gaga’s GLBT support has been problematic to say the least. But neither prepared me for Ke$ha singing Grow a Pear which I heard in a cafe today. I mean WHAT IN THE FUCK.
http://www.directlyrics.com/kesha-grow-a-pear-lyrics.htmlYeah I really dislike this. A lot. I’m surprised you hadn’t heard of it before today.
I hope you guys realize that this is about a guy being a pussy not having one, it’s not a song against dating someone trans or anything unless you want to take it that way. If you take it that way then yes of course it will be offensive.
I know you’re all about using offensive words/phrases in a creative and non-offensive way, but still this is shitty. I know it’s not about actually dating a trans* person, but even if you don’t look at how the lyrics could offend a trans* person, the song is also incredibly misogynistic. By saying that this guy is whiny and annoying because he “has a vag” and needs to “grow a pair,” Kesha is saying that he’s acting like a woman, and because of that is inferior.
I see where you’re coming from, though, because no, the song is not about dating a man who physically has a vagina. However, because the song makes slights about trans* people (I mean seriously, “I just can’t date a guy with a vag?”) and is misogynistic in general, that’s what makes it so offensive and stupid.
